Jonathan Butler has specialised from the outset of his career in family cases in all areas of work. These include public and private law applications (Children Act 1989) for parents, local authorities and children's guardians. He has a particular interest and expertise in cases involving mental health issues, and/or the impact upon public law proceedings of related obligations of Local Authorities.

Jonathan Butler is the author of Community Care Law and Local Authority Handbook (Jordans, March 2008). This includes a chapter on disabled children and adults, and the assessment of their needs, together with the obligations of Local Authorities in respect of children who are leaving the care system. He also sits as a part-time President of the Mental Health Review Tribunal, He regularly provides talks and training within the above areas to a variety of professionals, together with publications on the same subjects in a wide range of professional journals.
